A 75:25 joint venture (JV) has been signed between Exide Industries Ltd and Swiss company Leclanché to produce Lithium-ion batteries in Gujarat state where Exide is set to acquire the 15.9 acre production plant of Tudor India. This move will boost Exide’s capabilities in the realm of Lithium-ion cell production, allowing it to focus on modern technologies including e-transport, stationary energy storage systems and speciality storage markets. In e-transport, the target segment is fleet vehicles including e-buses, e-2wheelers and e-rickshaws.
A module and battery pack assembly line is expected to be operational by Q2 2019 and a lithium-ion cell production plant is expected to be in operation by mid 2020. In the intervening period, cells will be sourced from Leclanché’s plant in Willstätt, Germany.
